Mini-Interviews Elena Dovalsantos

The Society MI 6 Elena Dovalsantos

1. What’s your name, where are you from and how long have you been a member of the TS?

Elena Dovalsantos. Originally from the Philippines; currently residing in Ojai, California.

I’ve been a member of the TS for about 47 years.

2. Are you active in your Lodge/Section and if so, what do you do?

Give talks and lead classes on Theosophy, particularly on The Secret Doctrine; volunteer at the Krotona Institute of Theosophy in Ojai, CA; formerly, served as President of the Beacon TS Study Group in San Diego, CA.

3. How did you first learn about Theosophy or come in contact with the Society?

My maternal grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, siblings were/are Theosophists. I grew up going to TS meetings and joined the Society when I was very young.

4. What does Theosophy mean to you?

Since taking early retirement, I’ve decided to devote all my efforts towards studying Theosophy and working for it. It is the guiding power in my life. It has been a gift. It has given me an understanding of the meaning and purpose of existence. Most importantly, it has given me the peace that comes with such understanding. I hope it could be to all mankind what it has been to me

5. What is your favorite Theosophical book and why?

The Secret Doctrine. It provides a solid foundation for understanding Theosophy. It presents the stupendous vision of life and evolution, answering the most fundamental human questions. It is said that studying the SD inevitably changes us. I have found this to be so. It is a change that I cannot explain but it comes with a remarkable increase in the reverence for all life and a desire to seek that which is eternal.

6. What in your opinion is the biggest challenge the TS is facing at the moment?

We need to learn to convey Theosophy in the language that appeals to people today, that is both practical and interesting. We need our members to study so that the teachings can be meaningful to them and they can share it with others. There are many who are looking for answers but if we do not know how to impart it they walk away and we lose the opportunity to help. Most of all, we need to live the wisdom teachings as that is the best way they can make an impact on our lives and our world.

7. Is there anything you would wish for the future of the Theosophical Movement?

That it be a living power in the lives of our members, be a force towards elimination of strife and suffering in the world.
